Alucphia Bazaar and Lower Markets
[from here]
Leland continued down the winding stairwells that lead to the lower levels. He was close to the area where they had caged humans who were being sold for meat, granted they were criminals, it was still unsettling to see. He turned his attention away from those being judged for their misdeeds and instead turned to the market itself. He looks around the various stalls, his eyes scanning for the proper materials. He stepped up to a table piled with metallic ore, and began inspecting the items before turning to his camouflaged babysitters. "Hey, no need to hide yourselves. I know you're following me. The shimmer around your scales give your positions away." He says to the guards, before returning to his shopping. He turned to the lamia merchant and lifted a bar of golden-coppery metallic alloy. "This Dwarven ingot, what's the purity?" He asked, tapping at it. It sounded and felt about right... but he wanted to double check.

The Blacksmith, an older Lamia who's hair was streaked with silver, and who's golden scales were darkened and dulled with age and wear slithered over to the counter.
"Your lookin' at high grade there kid. 98.565% purity, courtesy of the high heat our smelter ovens can reach. That, combined with several fold means we can get the purity as high as modern foundries located in your human cities. You won't find better quality metals anywhere in the badlands." boasted the forgemaster.

He looked at the Lamia and his ore with some scrutiny. "Is that so? As a person with deep pockets," despite his appearance, he did have the cash, "...I'm looking for the absolute best in quality. Anything under near pure, and I'll loose my right arm." He began, tossing the pure bar between his hands, testing the weight. "I need to work with pure Dwarven and Ebony ingots old timer, and I need your word that they are as pure as you say. Then perhaps, I can reveal what I have in mind for them, I'll maybe even need the use of your forge." he explained, reaching into his bag and pulled out black silk sack. It rumbled like it contained rocks, and upon opening it, many sparkling diamonds the size river pebbles spilled from the sack. "So, is this thing in my hand the pure stuff? Or do you have the real thing further back in your shop?" He smiled.

Re: Alucphia Bazaar and Lower Markets
The lamia stared at Leland for several long seconds, before he smirked.
"Put that there down, it's a display piece. If I put the real ingots on display, every urchin and thief would be all over this place like locusts. Follow me..." the Forgemanster said as he opened a trapdoor, several wall sconces burst into flame below, a stairway, lined by two seluces on their side appeared. Slithering into the seluce on the right side of the staircase, the forge master started slithering down, motioning for Leland and his escort to follow. The sandstone construction of the majority of Aluphia gave way to deeper, more intricate metal and stonework.
After about 10 minutes of walking down the spiralling stairs, the place opened up into a large bedrock cavern, well beyond the sands reach above. But for some reason it was still hot. And not like the dry desert heat either. This heat was opressive...
"Welcome, to the Forge of the Ancients." said the Blacksmith.

"Welcome, to the Forge of the Ancients." said the Blacksmith.
Leland smiled back, grabbing the diamonds before following the old, slithering snake into his shop. Through a secret passage which had impressed the man, they continued their way down a spiraling stairway. They said Desert Elves once thrived here. The city was built by their hands, and the Lamia are equally crafty... makes one wonder... He thought absently, whistling at the expanse as they walked for several minutes. "Very out of the way." He chuckled, feeling the heat of magma rise from below.
Once they finally stopped, he took a moment to let the huge room be absorbed into his mind. "Forge of the Ancients..." He repeated, looking up at the decorated walls and metallic fixtures and then the bright orange glow of the pools of magma acting as the forge's source. "Well, you're forge is certainly impressive old one." He reaches back, and pulls out a box. "I've got a mold here, for a somewhat ambitious pistol. I've got one similar already," He says, pulling out with his left hand, a large double barreled revolver that had gold plating across its stainless frame. "However, I'm going for something a tad more beefier. I won't be able to fire twelve .45-70 shells from this revolver... only six." He says, putting the gun away after a longing glance over. "Its going to be rather complicated, pieces need to be just the right thickness and it has to be durable." He explained. "Thus, the reason for Dwarven metal. Its still around after centuries. Mythgard Steel was my first choice, but its rare out this way, so I'll settle for the Dwarven Metal, as its more common on Gailden, and its just as durable." He further explained.

The old blacksmith smirked. "Young Leland, this is one of the five founding forges of the Dwemer, the deep ones - the original ancestors of the Dwarves. This is where they invented Dwarven metals, and perfected it." he boasted, as he turned a great blue gear on the front of the dais, activating the massive forge.
After turning several dials and powering the device, pressure gauges flicking left to right as the smith made several expert adjustments., pulling and pushing levers as he worked.
"Ok, Pressure is nominal. Give me the Mold matrix please." said the smith with no preamble. All boasting was gone from his face, and in it's place, was the stern professional Leland knew the Smith was.

He smirked. "I think even the Forerunners would be proud, if they weren't enemies with the Dwarves." He chuckled, handing the molds for various pieces that needed to be taken into account. Fittings and smaller pieces save the trigger were to be in ebony steel, while the rest was to be in pure, Dwarven alloy. He wanted to help as well. "Point me in the direction, and let me help." He says, removing his tattered long coat, rolling up his shredded long sleeves. He looked homeless, wearing dirt encrusted clothes once belonging to a proud Gunslinger, but the deep claws of the few demons he had slain between his home and Beijio, among a few other encounters with hostiles both human and inhuman alike had taken its toll on his clothes. Blood stains, dirt and road grime clung to his fabrics, his leathers and flesh. If not for his show of the diamonds, one really couldn't guess this bearded, long haired man had much on him. For those several months alone... he didn't care how he looked. He did shape himself up a little before arriving into Beijio... and he was thankful, to some degree, that Ana didn't complain about his road stench. Finally feeling himself after so long, he realized how badly he needed and wanted, a bath right now. But first, the weapon needed to be made.

The smith nodded and pointed to a set of blacksmithing aprons and gloves. "This stuff gets hot, you don't want it on your hands and clothes kid. Suit up." he said, before unhooking a spare toolbelt from besides the forge, a malus, and a pair of smithing pliers. Then while Lenant set about getting ready, the Smoth set the molds upon the forge to create the matricies needed for the parts from it. The molds disappeared into one of the forge's chambers for a few moments while it created the matricies and let them set, before ejecting the molds.
"There, now that we got what we need from the molds, lets set about pouring the metals we need." said the Smith as he punched in a see of commands into the heads up display. "Now, how do you wanna set this up? The whole thing in Dwarven metal?"

Leland slips the apron, gloves and tools around him, before assisting the slithering forgemaster. When he was asked what he wanted, he shook his head. "Dwarven metal for the frame, cylinder, and trigger; but the smaller bits and pieces like the fittings, hammer, springs, ejector rod I think Ebony will fair better." He explained. "I'll also need to have a small bit of malachite glass, and something to help illuminate it for the forward blade sight as well, but we can work on that once the main frame is done."

The Smith nodded, and punched in some commands., several meters filled up to varying degrees. "So, the main body is going to be Dwarven metal, while the trimmings and fittings are ebony. Is this the correct configuration then?" he said, turning the display to face Leland.

The gunman nodded. "Looks perfect, both barrels need to be a well over eight inches long, with some cuts into the frame so this thing doesn't weigh a ton, but still heavy enough to absorb a lot of the recoil." He explained, before pulling out a .45-70 shell to help get a size estimate for the cylinder and barrel. "Overall, from barrel to grip, the gun should be 16 inches I reckon." he explained. The gun needed to be big, the barrels long enough to fire the rifle rounds with a degree of accuracy.

The Blacksmith smiled a little and shook his head "By the great serpent, you trying to hunt dinosaurs boy?" he said in a jesting fashion, before making some minor adjustments to take the size of the round into account, plus the barrel and frame length parameters.
"Okay, now to order up, and pour the metal into the forge." he said, as 3 large tubs of bubbling molten metal were brought overhead byautomated pully's each containing several litres of different metals, each kept at temperatures beyond the boiling point. The bubbles were the impurities of the ore being ejected, and siphoned away from the pure metals of the forge.
"So, we need 2.25 litres of Dwarven Metal, accounting for excess and waste metal. about 1.12 litres of Ebony... and about 4 ounces of Malachite." said the Smith on automatic, as the three different metals poured into the forges cylinders almost like running water, but instead of water spray and droplets, it let off a mantle of sparks for a moment, before calming into a natural flow.
"Now, we let that flow into the matricies to create our parts. Once that's done, we take them out of the foundry, and thats when our manual work with hammer and anvil begins. The forge makes the proccess easier, but metal shaping is still hard work."

Leland listened to the smithy serpent's question, and though he was jesting, replied back in a serious tone: "The idea is when fighting a monster, why not fight with a monster? I mean, what better weapon can you have for the job?"
He helped with the pouring and overseeing the tubs of molten metal as the craftsman continued his work. He listened to the old snake's words, and nodded in agreement. "Then after the shaping, the machining bit begins, drilling and rifling, fitting the fixtures such as the screws to allow both frames to lock into place. Testing, and then final touches."

The smith nodded with a smirk regarding fighting monsters with monsters. "It's not often my Gunsmithing skills get put to use. While our people do have ballistics technology, most tend to favor the bow and crossbow over guns and bullets. Mostly because for them it feels more... natural? That and silent. But I find that a healthy mix of weapons among out warriors provides better defense than over specialization."
When Leland mentioned machining and fitting, the old lamia nodded. "Yep, got all the tools for that here too" he said, as the cylinders began opening one by one, revealing the matrices - each containing the basic shape of the parts of Leland's new weapon. The lamia then dipped the matricies into vats of purified and distilled water. Loud hisses and gouts of steam ejected into the forge, which was siphoned off by overhead vents back to the city's own air circulation system back to the surface.

Leland smirked back. "Well, thats how we Gunslinger's are. A gun feels natural in my hand, as a bow is in a Lamia's. But I'll share a secret of the Gunslinger Association to ya old timer: each apprentice has to earn their right to use guns. Until you pass hand to hand and melee combat, you never get to touch one in the Association's training grounds." He replied, inspecting the weapon's basic parts taking shape and reveal themselves before them. "This thing will kick like a bastard, I can already feel the ache in my wrist." He chuckled.

"Heh, it probably will, especially. Especially if you go for high grain hand loads." replied the Smith regarding the recoil. "no matter how vented and ported, it's gonna have some kick. And since it's a revolver, that kick aint gonna be small."
Once the matricies had sufficiently cooled, they rose out of the water, and opened, revealing the basic shapes of the parts needed to make the weapon. With gloved hands, the Smith expertly extracted the parts from the matricies, leaving the excess metal to be reheated and readded back to their designated pools. He laid each piece on a nearby workbench. He pointed at a spot beside him, where several tools, and bench clamps, presses and other tools were, before he starts hammering, and chisling away at the peice of metal that was going to be used for the main frame of the weapon, and the bullet cylinder.
"I wonder if your big friend knows his weapons... He has a smith's hands by the look of 'im. Big and calloused." said the blacksmith conversationally, between the dull clangs of the malus on the chisel.

"That is the truth." he chuckled, following the man and took a seat, and began to do the same. Leland was knowledgeable of the craft, as it was tradition that Gunslinger's make their first pistols with their master's aid. He carried that very weapon on one of his criss cross holsters on his hips. He began tooling and machining the small intricate pieces, the gears and levers for the select fire switch, and cutting notches in the main hammer, and filing the second hammer, so it could remain hidden underneath the main one, checking so it the hammers alternating or simultaneous fire parts worked properly with one another. Thats when he heard him speak of Edgar. He raised a brow, and shrugged. "I saw that too... but not sure. I've only just met him myself." He admits, raising the pieces up and inspecting them in the light, filing away excess material with the diamond edged file. "Though," he starts, blowing away metallic dust. "he's got trustworthy eyes." He began to file the fittings and screws, taking out a block of dark redwood from his satchel which had taken from Siamatsu village, the hometown of his deceased wife, family... "Only way you get hands like his though, is by hard work. That, and holding a sword. My... wife had similar callouses."

The Smith smiled as he picked up the rods he was to use to form the barrels of the weapon, and began the long process of drilling out the barrels. Plenty of water and time as the metal shavings came spiralling out, creating the bore of the barrels. "Warriors who not only know how to maintain their weapons, but can con struct them themselves is especially rare. Especially these days. He may be built like a bulldozer, but his eyes were keenly intelligent. Reminds me of a scientist type in a way, analytical. So, he's a fighter, who has blacksmith hands and the eyes of a scientist.... and trustworthy. Thats a hell of a combo."

Re: Alucphia Bazaar and Lower Markets
"Remember to drill three holes on each side of those barrels," he reminded the elder snake, before he continued on is own work with the wooden block. He began to design the shape of the wooden grip of the weapon, and began to whittle and shape the grip to form comfortably in his own hand. He was quite fluid, and speedy with his work. Such workmanship usually took weeks, if not months but Leland and this forge master were making this master-craft firearm come into fruition rather quickly. He began to sand the custom hand grip for the revolver. "Aye, most people can purchase a weapon more readily available. But true craftsmanship comes from a pair of hands, rather than an assembly line." He says, though there have been some mass produced weapons he liked and trusted. "Heh, its quite the volatile mixture. I'm pretty sure he's got some magic power too, as well as some psychic abilities. He's definitely not your typical 'drifter' nor is he your typical creature you run into on Galiavan." He began to saw the shaped grip in half, then once finished, he took out a set of lacquer and applies it to the two halves of the grip. He let those set to dry, before he would drill a hole for the holding screw, and set off to work on the rear adjustable sights set in ebony.

Re: Alucphia Bazaar and Lower Markets
Leland McKelly wrote:"Remember to drill three holes on each side of those barrels," he reminded the elder snake, before he continued on is own work with the wooden block.
"Probably why he doesn't feel quite like an ordinary human." the smith said as he measured out the alignment of the porting vents on the barrel near the muzzle. Then, once aligned, he created the ports using a manual hand drill. Cleaning the excess metal shavings and dust from the barrel as well as the ports, the Smith set the barrel into the main body of the frame, and the cylinder to make sure they aligned properly, and smiled when they slid into place.
"Excellent. Measurements are exact to within plus or minus .002%. Didn't even get any resistance from the drag. This thing will be smooth as quicksilver."

He smirked, handing his finished pieces, including the modified extractor rod cast in ebony to the smith while he smoothed out the dwarven alloy trigger. "I suppose then, its time to dress her up a little. She looks too naked." He returned to the grips, bringing them together around the base of the handgun, before drilling a hole through all three materials. The copper colored alloy gleamed, and he fitted the grips to the metallic base as he continued to shape the glossy grips. Once finished, he fastened the holding screw through the center of the grips, through the solid base of the metallic frame. "Looks like it'll hold nicely." He says, removing the grips and holding screw, so that the more complex parts like the trigger assembly, cylinder release and fire selector could be assembled between the two halves of the solid frame. "There are days where I can relate." He finally says, in response about Ed, before he began shaping the malachite glass for the front blade sight.

"Remember to hit the malachite with a Luminos spell, and a good one if you want the light to last." explained the smith as he finished adjusting the cylinder by cleaning out the bullet chambers before setting to work on the clockwork like complexity of gears and sprockets necessary to allow the fire selector to select between the different barrels and hammers., And set the spring in around the bullet ejection rod to allow it to spring load back into place.
"Now, i take it you won't be needing rails or any custom hardware?" asked the smith as he delicately chipped away at the teeth of a gear.

"Right." Leland did as the smith suggested once he was finished with it, handing the piece over to the smith who was now working on the internals of the weapon. He smirked at the question. "No, they'll just get in the way. As it is, this thing should be pretty accurate, but adding scopes to it will be more of a hindrance; and a laser sight isn't necessary for someone like me." He says with a shrug. "I suppose though... I could add some inlay on both sides above the grip." he thinks out loud, before chuckling. "Hey, this thing's big and proud, it wouldn't hurt to add some filigree to it."

the Smith smiled as he set about to continue his work, hammering here, screwing there, and drilling more parts, blowtorching as needed, and polishing the parts as he worked. And they worked for a few more hours, setting in place a fine firearm. The smith laid out the stensil for the engravings and inlays as Leland suggested, all the while they talked, conversed and joked over several topics, which put the normally brooding Leland at ease and took his mind slowly off just the mission, as the perceptive Smith could tell the young man (Young compared to himself at least) needed the distratction, and to see Leland even slightly smile through his grim facade was a good sign that he was not lost to despair yet.

Leland did feel a bit more at ease, doing something he used to enjoy again. He was in his 30s, but looked younger due to the ascension process that he was certain he had obtained from the war 18 years ago, and you could only see this now as he laughed and smiled, in spite of his unkempt appearance. He had gotten used to the heat by this point, and had been trying to think of a name for the weapon between conversation with the Lamia Smith and work on the pistol.
